Eco-conscious Elegance at Bangkok’s Marriott

Eco-conscious Elegance at Bangkok’s Marriott

In the vibrant and bustling city of Bangkok, where skyscrapers tower above and millions of people converge, sustainability is becoming increasingly crucial. The hospitality sector, in particular, must adapt its business model to ensure that tourists can continue to enjoy luxurious experiences while minimizing the environmental impact of mass tourism. Sustainable travel is not just a trend but a necessary step to help reverse the environmental damage and protect the planet for future generations. By seeking out and demanding sustainable practices, luxury travelers can motivate the hospitality industry to adopt positive changes.

Marriott International recognizes its significant global responsibility and unique opportunity to drive positive change. Their 2025 Sustainability and Social Impact Goals, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, guide their efforts through a range of social, environmental, and sustainable initiatives aimed at making a meaningful impact in the global hospitality industry.

During our recent stay at two Marriott properties in Bangkok, we observed firsthand the impressive initiatives they have already implemented, along with their ongoing commitment to achieving their sustainability and social impact goals.

The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Guests at The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, are treated to an atmosphere of sophistication, elegance, and timeless charm. This historic Bangkok hotel, with roots dating back to 1876, has long catered to travelers seeking refined luxury. From the moment you enter its grand lobby, the opulence and tranquility promise a memorable and unique experience.

At The Athenee, various basic sustainable practices have been adopted. There are no plastic water bottles or straws, and bathroom amenities are provided in refillable dispensers. Although these changes seem simple, they are still not common in the hospitality industry, underscoring the need for widespread adoption. The Athenee sets a leadership example with other environmentally friendly initiatives, such as installing LED lighting throughout the property and an air conditioning system that reduces power usage by 8%. Additionally, the hotel has implemented a waste water filtration system that reuses 70% of generated wastewater for gardens and toilets.

Efforts to reduce food waste by 50% and ensure that 95% of food products are responsibly sourced are in line with Marriott’s 2025 goals. The Athenee is the first hotel globally to achieve ISO 20121, an events sustainability management system, reflecting its commitment to sustainability. For example, 100% of the rice served is sourced from an organic farm near Bangkok, supporting both environmental responsibility and fair trade for the farmers. Furthermore, plant-based, vegan, and vegetarian options are available in the hotel’s restaurants, offering guests sustainable and healthy culinary choices.

Madi Paidi Bangkok, Autograph Collection

Located in Bangkok’s lively Thong Lor district, Madi Paidi Bangkok, Autograph Collection, merges contemporary luxury with traditional Thai hospitality. This boutique hotel offers personalized experiences and attention to detail, ensuring an unforgettable stay that encapsulates modern luxury in Bangkok’s heart.

At Madi Paidi, sustainability is a priority. You’ll find no single-use plastic bottles or straws; instead, water is provided in reusable glass bottles, and straws are made from plant fibers. Bathrooms are equipped with refillable dispensers for shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner, along with toothpaste tablets in glass jars. Other toiletries are in biodegradable packaging, reducing waste.

The hotel’s food and beverage team is equally committed to sustainability. Initiatives at the signature restaurant, EKKALUCK, include reducing food waste and sourcing ingredients locally to minimize food miles. Single-use plastic has been eliminated from food packaging, with eco-friendly alternatives produced in Thailand.

Both The Athenee and Madi Paidi are on a continuous journey to enhance sustainability and reduce their environmental impact. As we approach 2025 and beyond, it’s vital for guests to support and demand such initiatives by choosing hotels and resorts that prioritize environmental responsibility.
