Navigating Airport Etiquette: Common Pitfalls to Avoid

I stumbled upon this old post in my cluttered documents folder, written a few months ago after a particularly long flight delay. At the time, I was exhausted, irritable, and frustrated with everything and everyone around me.

Travelling often seems glamorous in hindsight, but in the moment, it can be quite the opposite. Normally, I love the thrill of flying and the buzz of airports, but that day was different. Please excuse the grumpiness in this post—sometimes, we all need a good rant, right?

Here are a few of my tips and pet peeves when it comes to flying. Feel free to share your own in the comments and let me know what bothers you when you’re in the air!

Check Your Luggage Allowance

Every time I fly with Ryanair, there’s always someone arguing with the cabin crew about their luggage being too big, too heavy, or having too many bags. It’s almost comical how often this happens!

Most flights allow you to bring one small suitcase and a small handbag or laptop bag. That’s it. Trust me, they’re not going to let you bring extra bags, so check them in. Also, be aware they’re pretty good at spotting overweight bags, so leave the heavy stuff at home.

Only Bring Well-Behaved Kids to the Lounge

I love a good airport lounge for some peace and quiet, but nothing spoils it faster than a screaming child. I’m not against kids, just against screaming in a lounge I’ve paid to use.

Why Are You Queuing?

I never understand why people rush to stand in line as soon as the gate opens. Boarding takes at least 20 minutes, so why not sit or stretch your legs while you can? I’m usually the last to board because I prefer to spend the least amount of time on the plane. I know this isn’t for everyone, but it works for me.

Be Nice to the Cabin Crew

They have a tough job. On a recent flight, the crew was short-staffed because two members were injured during turbulence and couldn’t fly.

Use the Plane’s Toilets Before Landing

You know that long line at the airport toilets right after getting off the plane? You can avoid it by using the restroom on the plane just before landing. This way, you’ll breeze through immigration and get out of the airport faster. Plus, you’ll be among the first in the taxi queue, so you can start enjoying your trip sooner.

Passport Scanners Are Easy to Use

I don’t understand why some people struggle with ePassports. All you need to do is place it in the scanner and look directly where instructed. Don’t look around; focus on the arrow so the doors will open.

Don’t Crowd the Baggage Carousel

Standing closer to the baggage carousel doesn’t make your luggage arrive any faster, believe it or not! It drives me nuts when people crowd around it. If everyone took a step back, we’d all have more space and avoid the risk of getting hit by someone’s suitcase.

Alright, rant over!
