Sri Lanka: A World in One Island
Sri Lanka is a hot topic in travel right now, and it’s easy to see why. This destination offers a little something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in history, culture, nature, wellness, wildlife, or amazing cuisine, Sri Lanka has you covered.
With eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancient cities, lush rainforests, stunning beaches, national parks, tea estates, and warm, welcoming locals, this small, teardrop-shaped island is sure to impress. Sri Lanka has something for everyone.
Colombo
Colombo, the commercial heart and most populous city, boasts a rich colonial history. This bustling port city offers a fascinating mix of architecture and culture, from historic temples and lively markets to colonial-era buildings and expansive parks. A tuktuk ride through the labyrinthine Pettah market is a must. Alternatively, you can join the locals at Galle Face Green for a sunset view or enjoy high tea at one of the colonial-style hotels overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Hidden among Colombo’s chaotic streets are some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and significant temples. The Sri Kaliawasanathar Swami Devasthanam Temple, one of the city’s oldest and most ornate Hindu temples, is adorned with colorful statues. Gangaramaya Temple, near Beira Lake, is one of Colombo’s oldest Buddhist temples and is known for its striking architecture. Another notable temple is Koneswaram, perched on a rocky promontory, featuring intricate carvings and vibrant shrines.
Stay at Uga Residence, a centrally located boutique hotel that was once a grand Victorian townhouse. This property features 11 luxury suites and was a hub of colonial society.
Anuradhapura
A four-hour drive from Colombo, Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka’s ancient royal capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This city dates back to the fourth century BC and was the island’s spiritual and secular center for over a millennium, hosting more than 10,000 monks. The city is dotted with ancient monasteries and colossal dagobas (stupas), making it a pilgrimage site for Buddhists to this day.
Notable stupas include Jetavanarama, the largest brick-built monument in the world, Thuparamaya, the first dagoba built in the country, and Ruwanwelisaya, one of the tallest monuments globally. We took a private guided cycling tour through a dozen of these sites, including the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree.
Stay at Uga Ulagalla, a 150-year-old mansion set in 58 acres of gardens and rice fields, just a short drive from Anuradhapura and Sigiriya.
Sigiriya (Lion Rock Fortress)
Sigiriya, the most iconic of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, was built during the reign of King Kassapa I (AD 477 – 495). The site features a vertical rock that rises 650 feet, topped by the remains of a royal palace and surrounded by ancient pleasure gardens. Sigiriya is also famous for its ancient frescos and has served as both a royal palace and a Buddhist monastery.
Pro tip: Visit early to beat the heat and crowds, and be prepared for the 1,200-step climb.
Dambulla Cave Temples
The Dambulla Cave Temples are among the most beautiful and well-preserved in Asia. These temples, still home to Sri Lankan Buddhist monks, are carved into a granite outcrop and tower 520 feet over the plains. Dating from the third and second centuries BC, the site features 153 Buddha statues, as well as statues of kings and gods spread over five intricately painted caves.
Kandy
Kandy, the last capital of Sri Lanka’s ancient kings, is a picturesque city beside a lake in the central highlands. It is home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses a sacred tooth of Buddha and is a crucial part of local culture. The temple conducts rituals three times daily and is integral to Sri Lankan life. After visiting the temple, explore Kandy’s bustling marketplaces and historical sites.
Stay at King’s Pavilion, a renovated bungalow with rustic charm and luxurious touches, located in the peaceful hills above Kandy.
The Train
The famous train ride from Kandy to Ella is a must-do, offering stunning views of Sri Lanka’s vibrant green tea plantations. The Hill Country rail route, often described as one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys, is a highlight of any trip. We enjoyed a scenic three-hour ride from Kandy to Hatton, passing through picturesque tea country.
The Tea Estates
Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth-largest tea producer, with tea plantations dating back to 1867. The tea country is a lush expanse of green hills and plantations. Visitors can take leisurely walks, tea factory tours, and enjoy high tea with stunning views.
Stay at Ceylon Tea Trails, which offers luxurious accommodations in five historic tea-planter bungalows. The service is impeccable, and the surroundings are serene.
Galle
Galle, located at the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, is a must-visit. The Dutch-built Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest and best-preserved sea fort in South Asia. Inside, you’ll find Dutch Colonial buildings, ancient mosques, and quirky boutiques. Once a hub for spice traders, Galle now attracts artists, writers, and designers.
Stay at Fort Bazaar, a chic retreat with 18 rooms arranged around a central courtyard. The hotel is a restored 18th-century merchant’s house.
Balapitiya
For some relaxation, head to Balapitiya on Sri Lanka’s west coast. This area offers idyllic sandy beaches lined with palm trees and a range of activities or the option to simply unwind by the pool or sea.
Stay at Kumu Beach, a sleek, modern boutique hotel near golden sandy beaches.
If you haven’t yet discovered Sri Lanka, now is the time to do so before it becomes too crowded.
