I have to admit, when I was invited to explore Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, I had to look them up on Google Maps. In case you’re wondering, they’re part of the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain but are located off the coast of Morocco.
Even after figuring out their location, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, or if there would be any significant differences between the two. While they share some similarities like climate, culture, and food, they also have many differences. Knowing what each island offers can help you decide which one to visit, or if you should explore both. So, let’s dive into the question I was asked most about my trip: Fuerteventura or Lanzarote?
Fuerteventura: The Essentials
Fuerteventura is a small island with 1,660 square kilometers of stunning landscapes and beautiful beaches. The coastline is a major draw for sun-seekers, with popular beach towns like Correlejo in the north and Playa del Matorral in the south. But don’t just stick to the resorts; there’s so much more to see.
The island was formed around twenty million years ago due to volcanic activity, giving it a unique, almost otherworldly feel. The interior is mostly arid, with sparse vegetation and a few palm trees. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, and conservation is prioritized over development.
What to See and Do in Fuerteventura
To get the most out of your visit, rent a car at the airport. Start by heading up Tegu Mountain to Morro Velosa for a panoramic view of the island. The museum there offers insights into the island’s formation, local life, and ecological challenges.
Next, visit the charming town of Betancuria to see the cathedral and enjoy lunch at Casa Santa Maria. The old fishing harbor of El Cotillo is also worth a visit for its picturesque blue and white houses and excellent seafood restaurants. Nearby, you’ll find the Tostón lighthouse, now a conservation park.
For adventure seekers, Playa Sotavento is the place to go for windsurfing. Lobos Island, accessible by ferry from Corralejo, is great for snorkeling. If you’re staying in Correlejo, don’t miss the bright white sands of Parque Natural de Corralejo, a sea of dunes perfect for Instagram photos.

Lanzarote: The Essentials
Lanzarote is just 15 kilometers from Fuerteventura but feels completely different. The island is full of diverse landscapes, charming towns, art, museums, and unique wine regions. The volcanic activity here has created dramatic black cliffs and moon-like vistas.
What to See and Do in Lanzarote
You’ll need a car to explore Lanzarote. Start with Los Hervideros, where you can watch waves crash against black cliffs. Nearby, Lago Verde is a bright green lake in a volcanic crater, surrounded by black lava and red sand. Head to El Golfo for a meal at a fish restaurant on the black beach.
A visit to Timanfaya National Park is a must. Opt for a walking tour to fully experience it. The visitor center offers demonstrations of the island’s geothermal activity, with temperatures reaching up to 700 degrees Celsius just below the surface.
The influence of artist César Manrique is visible across the island. Visit Mirador del Rio for breathtaking views and the César Manrique Foundation to see his unique home and art gallery.
