Traveling can be stressful, especially when it comes to getting to the airport on time. Despite being a generally relaxed person, I find myself becoming a nervous wreck when I’m on a 5am train, worrying about missing my flight. Since moving out of London, my journey to the airport has become even longer, making me more anxious. To ease this stress, I prefer staying at a hotel near the airport when I have an early morning flight. This way, I can start my holiday a bit sooner and in a more relaxed state. If I can make it a luxurious stay, even better!
Before my recent ski trip to Catalonia, I stayed at the Felbridge Hotel and Spa, just 15 minutes from Gatwick Airport. This was arranged through aph.com, which offers airport hotels, parking, and other luxurious extras like lounges and transfers to enhance your travel experience.
The moment I stepped into the Felbridge Hotel, I was enveloped in a soothing atmosphere. Soft music played in the background, and the reception staff spoke in hushed tones, adding to the relaxing vibe. My room was spacious and welcoming, with a lovely view of the garden as the sun set.
The staff member who showed me to my room didn’t bother explaining how to use the air-con or TV (because who doesn’t know that?), but instead directed me to a fluffy dressing gown for my spa appointment. I knew I was going to enjoy my stay.
After quickly indulging in some sweets and biscuits, I headed to the spa for a Gelish manicure. The relaxing music continued as I chatted with the beautician over endless cups of tea. I then enjoyed the swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna, emerging an hour later feeling completely relaxed.
I considered dining at one of the hotel’s two restaurants, The Bay Tree Restaurant and Anise, but opted for room service in my PJs while watching Kevin McCloud on TV. The next morning, I was relieved to leave the hotel just after 6am, giving me enough time for breakfast and tea before my taxi arrived.
The luxury continued at the No.1 Traveller Lounge at Gatwick Airport. For just £22.50, I escaped the airport’s stress and crowds, enjoying a tranquil oasis with relaxing music and hushed whispers. I settled on a Chesterfield sofa with a latte and magazines, feeling more like I was in a stylish café than an airport. I had a healthy breakfast of fresh fruit salad, porridge, and yogurt, with a side of pain au chocolat.
Although there wasn’t wifi in the lounge, there were Macs available for internet access. The lounge also had a movie area, perfect for long waits. Flight screens ensured I didn’t miss my flight, despite the relaxed atmosphere. By 8am, the lounge was full but didn’t feel crowded. I recommend booking in advance, as those without reservations couldn’t enter when I left at 8:30am.
I walked to my gate just before it closed, feeling relaxed, happy, well-fed, and ready for my holiday with a bag full of magazines. This is definitely the way to start a holiday in style!
