As summer fades and the scent of mulled wine fills the air, it’s time to start thinking about where to spend our winter holidays. Sure, some of us might head to the snowy slopes of Courchevel, Aspen, or the Lofoten Islands, but if snow isn’t on your wishlist, where else can you go? Here are my top five destinations for the upcoming winter season that you might find appealing.
1. Torres del Paine, Chile
This place, dubbed the 8th Wonder of the World, is a hiker’s dream. Even if hiking isn’t your thing, you’ll still love the stunning views of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, lakes, rivers, and forests. It’s not overrun by tourists, which makes the experience even more special. For the best experience, stay in one of the luxurious lodges or hotels, like the Tierra Patagonia. Its unique design alone is worth the visit.
2. Maldives
The Maldives is an obvious pick for many travelers, and for a good reason. If you haven’t been, you should add it to your list soon. Our winter is the perfect time to visit this tropical paradise. There are numerous resorts for every budget, but I recommend the One & Only Reethi Rah, just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Malé’s international airport. Located on a beautiful private island, it offers everything you need for an unforgettable stay.
3. South Africa
South Africa is a versatile destination with something for everyone—from wildlife to incredible food. While Cape Town is universally loved, and many think the best time for a safari is from June to August, safaris can be enjoyed year-round. Winter is a great time to see wildlife in abundance, with the Big Five being a major highlight. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve is one of my favorite places for spotting these magnificent animals. Enhance your experience by staying at the &Beyond Tengile River Lodge, which offers luxurious suites, stunning views of the Sand River, and top-tier service.
4. Oman
Often overshadowed by its popular neighbor, Oman offers understated luxury and more space due to its larger size on the Arabian Peninsula. It’s rich in natural beauty and history. One standout place to stay is the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar resort, perched above a massive canyon. The dramatic views from many rooms and the dining experience right on the canyon’s edge are truly unique. Even Princess Diana once visited to enjoy the views and all that Oman has to offer.
5. Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Bora Bora is the quintessential tropical paradise. Unlike the Maldives, it’s dominated by the towering Mount Otemanu, offering diverse experiences for visitors. You can’t go wrong with accommodation here, but if I had to choose, I’d pick the St-Regis. It offers beautiful overwater and on-land villas, excellent dining options, and fantastic experiences for both adults and children.
These destinations offer alternatives to the usual winter getaways, so consider aligning your travel dreams with one of these incredible places.
