Best Places to See the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is a magical natural light display primarily visible in the northern hemisphere, showcasing shades of green, blue, and occasionally red.

What Causes the Northern Lights?

The phenomenon occurs when electrically charged particles from the sun are propelled towards Earth by the solar wind. When these particles collide with the gases in the Earth’s outer atmosphere, such as oxygen and nitrogen, they produce vivid light displays. Collisions with oxygen at high altitudes create red auras, nitrogen at lower altitudes generates blue light, and when particles interact at higher altitudes, they can produce stunning purples and violets. Mixed colors can sometimes appear as pink and white.

A Fairy-Tale Experience

Seeing the Northern Lights had always been a dream of mine. In April 2023, during my trip to Swedish Lapland, I was fortunate to witness this amazing spectacle twice. Above the frozen Lule River in Luleå, I saw vibrant green streaks spreading across the night sky, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
